At BULLIA CONSULTING, we have a deep appreciation of the financial challenges that many people face when they reach retirement. Studies have shown that about 93% of South Africans have insufficient funds to maintain a comfortable lifestyle when they leave full-time employment. Likewise, some 40% of employed, salaried South Africans do not belong to any pension/provident/retirement fund. These problems could have been averted through more careful planning and remuneration structuring by employers.
BULLIA CONSULTING provides a range of services to help pension/provident/retirement funds and employers to adopt optimal employee benefit strategies. Among our core strengths are helping our clients select the right retirement funds in line with their specific needs, and performing much of the work involved in ensuring a smooth transition. We also help employees themselves to understand the impact of the investment choices made, giving them greater peace of mind.
We work closely with our clients to tailor-make the best collaboration model, which often takes the form of a fixed-term project, and we are equally at home managing the affairs of a small and large number of employees.
The name ‘BULLIA’ was inspired by the Bullia rhodostoma and Bullia digitalis, commonly known as plough shells. Plough shells are common to South Africa’s sandy shores and are so-called because of their large ploughing foot. The foot of the plough shell is, unlike that of most gastropods, characterised by a large interior cavity containing sea water. Plough shells are carnivorous scavengers that feed on stranded organisms, decaying crabs and fish, blue bottles and other distressed sea creatures. It is not surprising that they are called the refuse removers or cleaners of the beach.
Since much of the company’s work over the years has involved cleaning up or closing down pension funds, the name ‘BULLIA’ was chosen during a rebranding exercise a few years ago.
Bullia Consulting is the brainchild of Mark de Klerk, the company’s director. Mark has more than 26 years of experience in the employee benefits field. He also serves as an independent Principal Executive Officer (PEO) and Section 26(2) Trustee for a number of funds and serves on the CRISA (Code for Responsible Investing in South Africa) Committee.
Mark has overseen the growth in assets of several prestigious retirement funds and done much to enhance communication standards between funds and their members – an achievement for which he is highly regarded in the industry. Mark has also developed a unique tender and scoring matrix to facilitate structured and objective assessments of both standalone and umbrella funds. This has proved invaluable when employers or trustees have had to consider new administrators or move to new umbrella funds.
